Students invest $6,000 for Bay Village Education Foundation - June, 2008
About 80 Bay High School and Bay Middle School students paired up last semester over a 12-week period to learn about investing in the stock market by using real dollars provided through a grant by the Bay Village Education Foundation (BVEF). The grant, titled Stock Market Investing, received the Thompson Economics Education Award from BVEF. The Thompson Economics Education Award was created with contributions from the Joseph H. Thompson Foundation; this award funds investment, finance and economic projects and programs at Bay High School and Bay Middle School.
Bay High business instructor Matt Thornsberry and Bay Middle School gifted education specialist Gina Tianello assigned students a variety of industries or business sectors to research. Students presented findings, and the group recommended stocks for investment by the Bay Village Education Foundation.
Students recommended that the Bay Village Education Foundation purchase three stocks from the technology sector: $1,500 for Research in Motion (RIMM), $900 for Activision (ATVI), and $600 for Cannon (CAJ). In addition, three stocks from the general market sectors were recommended: $1,500 for Exxon Mobil (XOM), $900 for General Electric (GE), and $600 for Johnson & Johnson (JNJ). Students also reported their activities and recommendations to the Bay Village Schools staff in a financial newsletter that they published and distributed via email.
